Peter Dyer: Mariah and the MkII
"Every day, my computer is involved with my music," remarks Peter Dyer, a keyboardist and programmer based in Los Angeles, California. "Between the numerous DAWs and plug-ins used, switching from project to project, program to program, artist to artist, it gets pretty hairy."
Peter, who uses a Novation 49 SL MkII, has toured the world with numerous musicians, and arranged and orchestrated for Mariah Carey's live shows. He finds the convenience of hardware control essential, but despairs at the configuration process he has experienced in the past. "I have always hated the initial setup of any midi controller, to get it to a point where its useful beyond basic note input. That painful process has been taken out of the equation by my Novation controller, allowing me to get to the music making right away."
Especially useful for Peter is the deep integration between Novation controllers and music software such as Ableton Live, Logic and Cubase. "Novation has done all the hard work for me, as every plug-in in Logic and Ableton is already mapped, along with numerous other VSTs I use daily. If a template for the SL MkII isn’t already included, Automap Pro makes it painless to design one."
Failing that, Peter can turn to the Novation Forum for inspiration: "the online forum of SL users on Novation’s website supplies and shares practically any template I could possibly want."
